The Russian Navy will receive for service an essentially new anti-submarine guided missile (ASGM). It enables killing submarines at a distance of up to tens of kilometres from warships. The ASGM operating pattern is fairly simple. A patrol aircraft or helicopter detects a submarine in a real time mode and provides a target designation. Further on, a missile is launched from the ship to the designated area where the target is destroyed, the Izvestia newspaper reports.

The Russian Navy follows the trend to operate robotic systems and increases the use of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) in the naval aviation. Naval aviation Commander Major-General Igor Kozhin said drone development for the Navy is a priority guideline for leading design bureaus. The naval aviation has to upgrade the fleet and gradually replace it with new aircraft in the near future. It has to receive a hundred new aircraft, including drones by 2020, expert Denis Fedutinov writes in the Independent Military Review.

Mil.Press Flotprom online publication published a regular annual rating of Russian and US Navy capabilities. Although 2018 was generally productive for the Russian Navy which received seven warships, its position against the US Navy deteriorated. The publication said Russian Navy capabilities comprised 45 percent of the US Navy in 2018. A year before they comprised 47% and in 2016 - 45, in 2015 - 44, in 2014 -52, in 2013 - 45, and in 2012 - 42.

While traditional ammunition is either stopped or deflected when it hits water, Nammo’s 30 mm Swimmer (APFSDS-T MK 258 Mod 1) swims straight through water, thanks to a groundbreaking design on the supercavitating projectile developed in cooperation with the US Navy. In this article, first published in the 2018 Nammo BulletIN, design engineer Jan Hasslid discusses the implications of this new technology.

Denis Manturov, the head of the Russian Ministry for Trade and Industry, and the vice-premier Yuri Borisov have revealed the prospects for the Russian aircraft carriers. Two statements, made almost simultaneously, throw light on the future of aircraft carriers for the Russian Navy, the Izvestia newspaper reports.

CMN Shipyard in Cherbourg, France, conducted sea trials on the 13th June 2018 on the OPV Thémis from the French Coastguard (Affaires Maritimes). The patrol vessel received a hydrodynamic upgrade at the shipyard by retrofitting the patented Hull Vane®, an underwater wing which reduces the ship’s resistance. Comparison with the benchmark sea trials – conducted in January in exactly the same conditions – by CMN’s sea trial team showed a reduction in fuel consumption of 18% at 12 knots, 27% at 15 knots and 22% at 20 knots. The top speed increased from 19.7 knots to 21 knots.

The 36th Belgian Navy Days were held at the Zeebrugge naval base on June 30th and July 1st 2018. For two days visitors could board several vessels from the Belgian Navy fleet and other European navies vessels. Navy Recognition attended the event. Here is our video coverage.

The Project 955 Borei-class nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarine Yuri Dolgorukiy (NATO reporting name: Dolgorukiy-class) performed a successful salvo launch of four Bulava (SS-NX-32) intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBM) from the White Sea to hit set targets at the Kura training range in Kamchatka in Russia’s Far East. The test took place May 22, 2018.

Trials of the latest Klavesin-2 unmanned underwater vehicle (UUV) began at a sea range in Crimea. The craft got the official military 2R52 index which means high readiness for acceptance into service. The range in Feodosiya will be used for trials of marine robots. Experts believe the resumption of range operations will accelerate trials and introduction of naval hardware, the Izvestia daily writes.
