Leonardo showcases its naval know-how at EURONAVAL 2018

Leonardo is attending Euronaval (Paris Le Bourget, 23-26 October; Hall 2, stand K128) showcasing its newly enhanced capabilities and technologies in the maritime domain, an increasingly important strategic market and an interconnecting domain featuring huge geopolitical, commercial and economic interests, where naval forces play a major role in making the sea a safer place.

Leveraging on proprietary technologies Leonardo partners with its customers to provide total maritime domain awareness by delivering a comprehensive offer of systems and products based on a strong and innovative product portfolio ranging from turn-key combat management systems for surveillance and security to naval guns, ammunition, sensors and underwater systems for all classes of military vessels, both manned and unmanned. Furthermore, the company’s portfolio is rapidly expanding bringing to market advanced naval training and maintenance solutions, and satellite systems and services for Earth observation and geo-location, that are essential for marine environmental monitoring and maritime security.

Thanks to its wide range of capabilities on offer worldwide, Leonardo is finalising contracts in several countries: from Africa to Oceania, and is pursuing important tenders in Europe, South America and the Middle East, while also partnering with Fincantieri. To better face the new challenges in the international market and offer joint solutions in an increasingly competitive and demanding sector Leonardo and Fincantieri have just revamped their partnership through Orizzonte Sistemi Navali (OSN - Joint Venture with shares of 51% and 49% respectively), as part of the preferred partnership launched in October 2014. By this agreement, the two parties will enhance all the high-tech skills and expertise developed at a national level; Leonardo will be the preferred partner for the Combat Management System and the equipment and Combat systems of the ship.

MORPHEUS XR is making its debut at this years’ Euronaval on Leonardo’s stand. It is an example of how cost-effective through-life management of support services can be enhanced by brand new virtual and immersive reality systems. Operations on a ship’s bridge can be experienced in a naval command and control centre replica based on Leonardo’s unique Combat Management System (CMS). Modular and flexible, the CMS relies on cutting edge technologies and satisfies the most rigorous requirements. Its capabilities can be plugged into any existing CMS to meet the requirements of the world’s most demanding naval forces.

A leading provider of naval surface and underwater defence systems, Leonardo highlights its best in class products such as heavy and lightweight torpedoes, from Black Shark to Black Scorpion and, in the domain of naval guns, the new fully digital high-performance Marlin 40 naval gun, for lightweight vessels designed for patrol operations. A range of naval gun ammunition, notably the VULCANO 127mm and 76mm, are displayed, which provide unrivalled accuracy.

Leonardo’s airborne maritime surveillance capabilities are represented by the display of its unrivalled range of helicopters and sensors. These include the AW101, the NH90 helicopter, recently chosen by Qatar under a 3 billion Euro contract, AW159 and the AWHero Rotary Unmanned Air System, which can carry the Gabbiano Ultralight surveillance radar. The AWHero will be at the core of the upcoming OCEAN 2020 demonstrations, the European Defence Fund’s strategic research programme led by Leonardo to develop and test new concepts and technologies for naval surveillance and maritime safety. Leonardo is leading a team of 42 partners from 15 European countries to deliver this critical research into the maritime technologies of the future.

At Leonardo’s stand, the US subsidiary Leonardo DRS is displaying its innovative hybrid electric drive (HED) ship propulsion system, which allows the ship to operate much more efficiently at low speeds, increasing mission endurance and reducing emissions.
