Pella Shipyard Laid Keel of 4th Project 22800 Karakurt-class Corvette for Russian Navy

The Pella Shipyard in St. Petersburg laid the keel of the fourth small missile boat of project 22800 (Karakurt-class). The vessel will be named Burya. "It is difficult to underestimate the importance of the warship for the Navy. The small boat construction experience is inherited from the Soviet Union which provided the best price-efficiency ratio for such warships," Navy Chief-of-Staff Vice Admiral Andrei Volozhinsky said at the ceremony.

"Such warships have engaged in combat of late and confirmed their efficiency in the Mediterranean Sea. We have long expected the arrival of the boats as the fleet needs them," he added.

Navy Commander-in-Chief Vladimir KIorolev ordered to assign the name of Burya to the new boat. Volozhinsky said the boats of the class were deployed in all fleets and their divisions were always called "bad weather" units. The tradition to name the new boats after decommissioned warships remained.

The small missile boat of project 22800 is designated to strike at critically important coastal facilities of the adversary, destroy surface warships, vessels and boats either independently or in interaction with other forces, and to repel air attack with its own weapons.

The Pella Shipyard is already building three boats of the new-generation project 22800 - Hurricane, Typhoon and Shkval. They were designed by the Almaz bureau and have a displacement of 800-900 tons, a speed of over 30 knots, autonomous navigation of 12 days, a range of close to 2500 miles, and a crew of 39 men.

The boats will be armed with high-precision missiles (one 8-container vertical launcher) and modern artillery weapons. The advantages of the warships include high maneuverability, increased seaworthiness, and the hull and erections architecture made with stealth technologies.

At the international military-technical forum Army-2016 the Almaz design bureau for the first time demonstrated the export version of the boat (small corvette) of project 22800E (Karakurt-E) with missile complexes Caliber-NKE, Yakhont or Bramos (8 missiles).

Anti-aircraft weapons may include Kashtan-M (16 guided missiles, 1000 rounds of 30-mm ammunition) or Palma (8 guided missiles, 1000 rounds of 30-mm ammunition), as well as Igla-S (8 missiles). The artillery weapons may include 76-mm 1xAU AK-176MA or 1xAU of Melara Company, as well as 2xAU AK-630M or 1xAU AK-630M2.

The propulsion is provided by either three M-507D-1 diesel engines or a combination of two M-507D-1 and one gas turbine M70FRU. Upon request of foreign customers two diesel engines MTU 20V4000TE93 GE LM1500 can be installed.

Navy Recognition Comments:

The Project 22800 Karakurt-class guided missile corvette was developed by the Almaz Design Bureau. She measures 60 m long and 10 m abeam, with a draught of 4 m. Her main propulsion unit is diesel-electric and Russian-made. The ship has a maximum speed of 30 knots, a cruising range of 2,500 nm and an endurance of 15 days. Her armament will comprise a 100-mm or 76-mm versatile automatic gun and the Pantsir-M or Palma air defense missile/gun system. The corvette’s superstructure will house an UKSK eight-cell VLS to accommodate the Kalibr-NK system’s missiles.

Two Project 22800 guided missile corvettes, the Uragan and Typhoon, had been laid down by the Pella Shipyard in St. Petersburg. The third hull has been laid down by the Federal State Unitary Enterprise «Shipyard «Morye» in Feodosiya, Crimea in May this year. The lead ship is slated for delivery in 2017.
