Admiral Wim Robberecht is the new Chief of the Belgian Navy
 
On September 20 2016, Admiral Wim Robberecht will be appointed as the new Commander of the Marine Component of the Belgian Armed Forces (Commandant de la composante Marine) during a ceremony at the Zeebrugge naval base. Admiral Robberecht succeeds to Admiral Georges Heeren. The ceremony will be attended by Belgian Minister of Defence Mr. Steven Vandeput and by the Belgian Chief of Defence (Chief of Joint Staff) General Compernol.

Under the command of Admiral Georges Heeren, the Belgian Navy has participated in several international missions, such as the "Active Endeavour" operation, the escort of French aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle and twice to the "Sophia" operation (with the aim of neutralising established refugee smuggling routes in the Mediterranean and rescueing migrants in distress).
