Russia starts design work on Priboy LHD Amphibious Assault Ship

Work to design the promising Priboy amphibious assault ship has begun in Russia and the shipyards that may build vessels of the type are already known, Vice-President for Warship Construction at the United Shipbuilding Corporation (USC) Igor Ponomaryov told TASS. The Russian Navy hopes to receive at least two perspective universal landing ships by 2025, Deputy Navy Commander for armaments Vice-Admiral Viktor Bursuk said at the VIII International naval show in St. Petersburg.

"USC companies have started working on this project. There is a project pipeline and there is understanding of all basic technologies. The United Shipbuilding Corporation has facilities ready to build the ship, in particular, the upgraded Northern Shipyard, the Baltic Shipyard and the Sevmash Company that has considerable experience in building large surface ships," Ponomaryov said.

Earlier, USC Head Alexei Rakhmanov told TASS that the construction of Priboy helicopter carriers had been included in the new 2018-2025 state armament program.

Russian Deputy Defense Minister Yuri Borisov said that the first Russian-made all-purpose amphibious assault ship would be built approximately by 2022 but he did not specify its type.

The display of the Krylov center features a mockup of the universal Priboy landing ship. "The Navy needs such warships. Their design and construction is stipulated by the state armaments program up to 2025. We plan to make at least two such warships operational in the Navy by 2025," Deputy Navy Commander for armaments Vice-Admiral Viktor Bursuk said.

The Priboy ship has a displacement of 23,000 tones, a length of 200 meters, a width of 34 meters, a designed draught of 7.5 meters, a full speed of 20 knots, a cruising speed of 14 knots, an endurance of 6,000 miles and a cruising capacity of 30 days.

The ship can withstand storms of force 6-7 on the Beaufort scale (strong breeze/near gale).
The helicopter carrier is planned to be equipped with a gas-turbine main propulsion plant. The ship’s crew totals about 400. The vessel can transport 500-900 marines, about 50 infantry fighting vehicles and up to 10 tanks.
Up to 12 military transport and search and rescue helicopters can be based on the Priboy ship. It can also carry six landing boats with a cargo-carrying capacity of 45 tons and six assault boats on davits.
