Russian Navy will receive six new submarines in 2020

The Russian Navy will receive six submarines, including four nuclear-powered subs in 2020 for the first time over the past 28 years. In 1992, The Russian has received the same number of submarines. Since 2013, new submarines have been regularly arriving for the Russian Navy. In 2014, four submarines have joined the Russian Navy.

Russian shipbuilders are set to deliver two submarines to the Navy by the end of this year. Sevmash CEO Mikhail Budnichenko said in June that the Navy would get the Project 955A Borei-class lead submarine Knyaz Vladimir (Prince Vladimir) by the end of 2019. In March this year, Admiralty Shipyard Head Alexander Buzakov said that the shipbuilders would deliver the first Project 636.3 submarine Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky to the Pacific Fleet this year.

Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu earlier stated that one diesel-electric sub and two nuclear-powered submarines would arrive for the Navy by the end of this year. As another source told TASS, "the sub Kazan was expected to be one of such nuclear-powered submarines but its delivery was re-scheduled for 2020."

The Borei class, also referred to as Dolgorukiy class, Russian designation Project 955 Borei and Project 955A Borei-A, is a nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarine built by Sevmash for the Russian Navy. The Borei submarines are approximately 170 meters long, 13 meters in diameter, and have a maximum submerged speed of at least 46 kilometers per hour (25 kn; 29 mph).

Smaller than the Typhoon class, the Boreis were reportedly initially slated to carry 12 missiles but are able to carry four more due to the decrease in mass of the 36-ton Bulava SLBM, a modified version of the Topol-M ICBM (InterContinental Ballistic Missile) over the originally proposed R-39UTTH Bark.

The Project 636.3 (‘Varshavyanka’) is referred to the third generation of diesel-electric submarines. The submarines of this type have been designed by the Rubin Central Design Bureau. They develop a speed of up to 20 knots, have sea endurance of 45 days and a crew of 52 men. They can dive to a depth of about 300 meters. The submarines of this class displace over 2,000 tonnes in their surface position and about 4,000 tonnes under the water. Varshavyanka-class subs are armed with Kalibr cruise missiles.

It features improved engines, an improved combat system, as well as new noise reduction technology.
