Russian Baltic Shipyard has laid down the fourth Project 22220 nuclear-powered icebreaker Chukotka


According to information published by the Russian press agency TASS on December 17, 2020, Russia’s Baltic Shipyard (a subsidiary of the United Shipbuilding Corporation USC) has laid down the fourth Project 22220 nuclear-powered icebreaker ‘Chukotka’, the press department of the USC reported.

“These icebreakers [Project 22220] are the most powerful and effective ships of this class in the world. The constant increase of the proportion of the Russian-made components is a source of our pride. I have no doubts that we will find new innovative solutions,” said Director General of state corporation Rosatom Alexey Likhachyov.

“The Project 22220 multipurpose nuclear-powered icebreakers are to form the backbone of the modern nuclear-powered icebreaking fleet. The type ship of the series, the ‘Arktika’ icebreaker, has already made its first voyage along the Northern Sea Route,” said Director General of Atomflot Mustafa Kashka.

JSC Baltic Shipyard and state corporation Rosaatom signed the contract worth some RUB100 billion (USD1.25 billion) for two new Project 22220 icebreakers in August 2019.

The Baltic Shipyard is building a total of five Project 22220 icebreakers, namely, ‘Arktika’, ‘Sibir’, ‘Ural’, ‘Yakutia’, and ‘Chukotka’. The type ship, ‘Arktika’, was delivered to the customer in October 2020.
