The Project 885M Yasen-M class lead submarine Kazan (NATO reporting name: Severodvinsk-class) has fired its main missile system against a coastal target during state trials, the Defense Ministry’s press office said : “The missile live-firing was conducted during a final stage of the submarine’s state trials in the White Sea. A cruise missile of the Kalibr [SS-N-27 Sizzler] missile system hit a coastal target set up at the Chizha training range in the Arkhangelsk Region [in north Russia] at a distance of more than 1,000 km [621 mi]”. Ships and vessels of the Northern Fleet’s White Sea naval base cordoned off the area.

The Kazan nuclear-powered attack submarine with crewmen and a trial team onboard started the final stage of the state trials on November 21. The submarine will conduct maneuvers in the above- and underwater positions at various depths and check its main systems. While at sea, the crew will test onboard systems, mechanisms, and armament. After the Kazan completes its state trials, it will join the Navy.

The Project 885 and Project 885M submarines have a vertical launcher to fire 3M-54 (SS-N-27 Sizzler) and 3M-14 (SS-N-30) cruise missiles of the Kalibr missile system designed to hit adversary ships and stationary ground targets, respectively. It can also launch 3M-55 (SS-N-26 Strobile) missiles of the Oniks missile system. Thus, the Kazan submarine fired a 3M-14 missile to a distance of more than 1,000 km.
Missiles of this type were launched by Russian surface ships and submarines during the operations in Syria. 3M-14 missiles were launched to a distance not exceeding 1,300 km (808 miles).
The range of the 3M-14 missile with both conventional and nuclear warheads is undisclosed. According to the Defense Ministry, Russian Navy ships and submarines delivered 100 strikes with 3M-14 missiles during the operations in Syria.
The Kazan submarine was laid down by the Sevmash Shipyard in north Russia on July 24, 2009 and launched on March 31, 2017. It is currently undergoing trials. The submarine is expected to join the Russian Navy by the yearend and enter service with the Northern Fleet.
