German shipyard TKMS to propose its new MEKO A-300 frigate for Polish Navy MIECZNIK acquisition program


According to information published on August 6, 2021, German shipyard ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems (TKMS) has announced that the company was shortlisted to prepare a Concept Design and Feasibility Study as part of the MIECZNIK frigates program, concerning the acquisition of multi-mission frigates for the Polish Navy.

If selected, the German shipyard ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems (TKMS) will form an enduring Technology Partnership with the Polish industry for the building, integration and lifecycle support of the MEKO® A-300 PL frigates entirely in Poland. Partnering with the industry of other nations to build our designs is ‘standard practice’ for ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems, with over 50% of our exported warships having been built by our customer shipyards over the years.

As a leading supplier of frigate warship technology to 19 navies worldwide to date, including 6 NATO navies, TKMS is proud to be able to offer Poland the MEKO® A-300 PL, our most up-to-date variant of the famous MEKO® technology frigate family, said the CEO of TKMS, Dr. Rolf Wirtz.

The MEKO A-300 frigate is not yet available but according to internet sources, the ship will have a length between 125 to 130 meters with a displacement of 5,500 tons. She will be able to carry 64 long-range missiles.

The MEKO A-300 will be fitted with a combination of APAR (Advanced Phased Array Radar) Block 2 multifunction radar with SMART L (Signaal Multibeam Acquisition Radar for Tracking, L band) long-range search radar. The APAR Block 2 is a new X-band multifunctional radar featuring multi-beam volume search, horizon search, hemispherical target tracking and unparalleled firepower with semi-active and active missiles. The radar system fully supports anti-air warfare (AAW) and anti-surface warfare (ASuW) operations and is fully compatible with Standard Missile SM-2 and ESSM missiles.

The SMART-L is a 3D multibeam radar designed to provide long-range air & surface surveillance and target designation. It is a fully digitally controlled Active Electronically Scanned Array (AESA) radar. The applied high-end techniques result in a radar with an unrivaled long-range performance of 2,000 km. Within this enormous range, it detects a wide spectrum of targets: air-breathing targets, stealth targets, and ballistic missiles.

The MEKO A-300 frigate could be armed with a 76 or a 127 mm naval gun and will be able to carry 16 surface-to-surface missiles instead of the standard 8, which are common to many combat ships.
