BAE wins $50M Navy contract to modernize USS Russell destroyer ship

BAE Systems San Diego Ship Repair will facilitate work in support of the military service branch's USS Russell and deploy employees who will be responsible for the ship's update and continued operations, the Department of Defense said Monday.

The award has a $34.7 million base value and would reach its potential value if the service branch exercises all options.

Work covers fiscal 2021 selected restricted availability and is scheduled for completion in September 2022. BAE competed with two other offerors as part of the contract's procurement process.

USS Russell (DDG-59) is an Arleigh Burke-class destroyer in the United States Navy.

The Arleigh Burke class of guided missile destroyers (DDGs) is a class of destroyer built around the Aegis Combat System and the SPY-1D multifunction passive electronically scanned array radar. The ship is armed with 56 Raytheon Tomahawk cruise missiles, with a combination of land-attack (TLAM) missiles with a Tercom-aided navigation system, and anti-ship missiles with inertial guidance. The Standard SM-2MR block 4 surface-to-air missiles with command / inertial guidance remain at the centre of the Aegis system.
