Admiral Essen is a frigate of the Admiral Grigorovich class of the Russian Navy. It is based with the Black Sea Fleet at Sevastopol. The Admiral Grigorovich class also referred to as Krivak IV class, Russian designation Project 11356R/М, is a class of frigates built by the Yantar Shipyard in Kaliningrad for the Russian Navy.

The Admiral Grigorovich-Class frigates have been designed to conduct anti-surface warfare, anti-submarine warfare, and anti-air warfare missions. The Admiral Grigorovich Class incorporates a stealthy hull design developed by the Severnoye Design Bureau. The hull and superstructures were designed to have low radar, acoustic and infrared signatures.

The Admiral Grigorovich-class frigate is armed with one 100 mm A-190 Arsenal naval gun, UKSK VLS cells able to launch Kalibr, Oniks, or Zircon anti-ship cruise missiles, 24 3S90M VLS cells for 9M317M surface-to-air-missiles, two AK-630 CIWS, 8 Igla-S or Verba air defense missile systems, two double 533 mm torpedo tubes and one RBU-6000 rocket launcher.

In May and September 2017, in the course of the Russian military campaign in Syria, Admiral Essen hit targets in Syria by launching Kalibr cruise missiles.

The RK-360MC Neptune is a cruise anti-ship missile that can be mounted on ships, land vehicles, or air launchers. The missile was unveiled for the first time to the public at the defense exhibition "Weapons and Security" in October 2015.

The RK-360MC Neptune missile has a maximum firing range of 280 km. It carries a High Explosive Fragmentation (HE-FRAG) warhead, which weighs around 145 kg. This missile should be efficient against vessels with a displacement of up to 5,000 tons, such as frigates and destroyers.
