The Ottawa and Vancouver are both Halifax-class frigates equipped to support an onboard CH-148 helicopter. The Asterix will back both ships in their operations.

The Indo-Pacific region is a strategic hotspot. Canada's increased naval operations aim to ensure the region remains stable, free, and open to international standards.

While in the region, the ships will join various training drills with local defense forces. The Ottawa will operate mainly in Southeast Asia, and the Vancouver in Northeast Asia. Additionally, the Vancouver will assist in monitoring North Korean activities related to UN sanctions.

Canada's recent Indo-Pacific Strategy prioritizes peace and security in the region. This includes participating more in regional training, launching cyber initiatives, and fostering civilian defense relationships. Monitoring North Korean sanctions further showcases Canada's role in maintaining regional security.

About the Halifax class

Ottawa and Vancouver are equipped with the CANEWS Electronic Support Measures and the CMS 330 Combat Management System, enabling them to detect and act upon electronic signals in their vicinity.

Their armament, comprising the BAE Mk 38 naval gun, the RIM-162 Evolved SeaSparrow Missile, and the Harpoon Block II anti-ship missiles, provides them with a balanced capability to handle varied maritime situations.

With their propulsion systems, the ships can navigate the Indo-Pacific waters effectively, ensuring that they can be positioned as required. Their sonar capabilities also allow them to monitor underwater activity, a relevant task in the region's waters.

The CH-148 Cyclone helicopters aboard these ships enhance their operational scope by providing an aerial dimension to their reconnaissance efforts.
