The Type 636 and its successor, the Type 636A hydrographic survey ships, are designed for hydrographic surveys and oceanographic research.

These ships are built by the Wuhu Shipyard and are the result of the efforts of the 708th Institute of China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC), also known as the China Shipbuilding and Oceanic Engineering Design Academy.

In the design process, the manufacturer placed a strong emphasis on reducing vibrations and internal noise, which has resulted in a ship that operates with low levels of both.

The survey ships were built by the Wuhu Shipyard and entered service in August 1998. In November 2011, they were transferred to the Chinese Coast Guard.

In terms of specifications, the Type 636 measures 129.82 meters in length, 17 meters in width, and 8.1 meters in depth. They are capable of cruising at a speed of 15 knots and have a top speed of 18 knots, with a range of 15000 nautical miles.

The displacement of these ships is 5872 tons, and they have a maximum wind scale resistance of 12. Additionally, these ships have an endurance of 60 days.
