Indian Navy to purchase Shakti EW systems from Bharat Electronics.

According to information published by the Indian government on February 13, 2024, the Ministry of Defence confirmed a contract with Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL), Hyderabad, for the procurement of 11 Shakti Electronic Warfare (EW) Systems, alongside necessary equipment and accessories for the Indian Navy.

The contract, amounting to Rs. 2269.54 crore, falls under the Buy (Indian- IDDM) category, aimed at enhancing the navy's electronic warfare capabilities with domestically produced technology.

About the Shakti EW system

Developed by the Defence Electronics Research Laboratory (DLRL) in Hyderabad, part of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), the Shakti EW System is engineered for capital warships of the Indian Navy.

Its functionalities include the interception, detection, classification, identification, and jamming of both traditional and advanced radar signals. This system is intended to supersede the navy's older EW Systems.

Incorporating wideband Electronic Support Measures (ESM) and Electronic Counter Measures (ECM), the Shakti system is designed to defend navy ships against missile threats.

The ESM component enables precise detection and interception of radar signals, while the ECM feature disrupts the guidance systems of incoming missiles. Additionally, the system offers radar fingerprinting and data recording capabilities for detailed post-mission analysis. The first installation of the Shakti system has been completed on INS Visakhapatnam.
