Next Gen Project 23560 Leader-class Destroyer Preliminary Design Handed Over to Russian Navy

The Krylov State Scientific Center produced and handed over to the Russian Navy the preliminary design of the Leader destroyer, Deputy Director General of the center Valery Polyakov told TASS. "In the framework of a contract with the Russian Navy the Krylov center designed the avant-project of a new destroyer codenamed the Leader for the national Navy and Shkval (project 23560E) for export. A full set of blueprints and calculations has been handed over to the customer," he said.

Twelve ships of the 10,000t "Leader class" are planned to enter service from 2023-25, split between the Northern and Pacific Fleets. They will all be nuclear powered. They will be fitted with the ABM-capable S-500 SAM and Kalibr (SS-N-27) cruise missile. Image: forums.airbase.ru

The preliminary design involved R&D according to the technical assignment of the customer. The avant-project has been handed over to a design bureau which is working on the basic and final design of the future warship. Polyakov said it was extremely important to carry out R&D for preliminary projects of future warships. The Russian defense ministry and the ministry of industry and trade decided to enhance interaction between the leading defense research organizations and the main shipbuilding enterprise which is the Krylov center at all stages of warships, armaments and hardware creation.

"The industry mostly focuses on scientific, technical and production potential while research institutes of the defense ministry pay most attention to strategic, operational and tactical issues," Polyakov said.

The agreement with the military includes the following joint work of the Krylov center and defense research organizations: long-term forecast and determination of the military shipbuilding guidelines, feasibility studies and proposals for the state armaments program and state defense orders, design of avant-projects for warships and submarines, drafting of technical assignments for warship construction, their armaments and hardware.

"Joint work also covers examination of technical assignments for warship construction, warship and program projects," Polyakov said. "The Krylov State Scientific Center is ready to cooperate with the military on all guidelines," he stressed.

The advanced Project 23560 destroyers /codename Leader/ will replace Project 956 and 1155 ships, the current backbone of the oceangoing general purpose naval force. For the future ship a model was chosen powered by a nuclear plant. For armament they will get Kalibr and Oniks strike missile systems or their modifications plus a ship-based version of the S-500 air defense system with an anti-missile capability.
