The U.S. Navy has awarded General Dynamics Bath Iron Works funding for the planning and construction of two Arleigh Burke-class destroyers, DDG 126 and DDG 127. The contract modification fully funds the two ships. The contract modification includes funding for the Flight III upgrades on DDG 126.

To the applause of the workforce at Halifax Shipyard, the Ship’s Company of Her Majesty’s Canadian Ship (HMCS) Halifax eagerly marched to Halifax Shipyard today to accept their frigate following her successful docking work period (DWP). HMCS Halifax entered the graving dock at Halifax Shipyard on October 20, 2016, for a DWP that included routine maintenance and upgrades to ensure the longevity of the vessel.

Defence Secretary Sir Michael Fallon unveiled the name of one of the new Type 26 frigates as HMS Belfast during a trip to Northern Ireland. The second to be named in the City Class of eight brand new, cutting-edge, anti-submarine warfare frigates, HMS Belfast will provide advanced protection for the likes of the UK’s nuclear deterrent and Queen Elizabeth Class aircraft carriers. The Defence Secretary revealed the name at Belfast shipyard Harland and Wolff, which built the Royal Navy’s last HMS Belfast, in 1938.

Italian shipbuilding giant Fincantieri will take control of STX France under a shared ownership agreement. The agreement was made following a Franco-Italian summit held yesterday in Lyon in central France. According to the agreement, Fincantieri will take a 50 percent stake in STX France. The French state will hold 34.34 percent, Naval Group (formerly known as DCNS) 10 percent, STX personnel 2 percent and STX local suppliers 3.66 percent.

Our colleagues from East Pendulum are reporting that the Huangpu Shipyard of the Chinese naval group CSSC launched a Type 054A frigate for People's Liberation Army Navy (PLAN or Chinese Navy) on September 22nd. This is the 14th frigate of this class (designated Jiangkai II-class by NATO) built in this shipyard, located near the city of Guangzhou in southern China, and the 28th overall in the series. The 27th Type 054A was launched less than 6 months ago, showing once again the fast pace of China's naval shipbuilding industry.

Lockheed Martin and Fincantieri Marinette Marine delivered the future USS Little Rock (LCS 9) to the U.S. Navy on Sept. 25. The future USS Little Rock, the fifth Freedom-variant LCS built by Lockheed Martin and Fincantieri Marinette Marine, is scheduled to be commissioned in Buffalo later this year. She will be the first U.S. Navy ship to be commissioned next to her decommissioned namesake.
