About the Wasp-class:

The Wasp-class is a class of Landing Helicopter Dock (LHD) amphibious assault ships operated by the United States Navy. Based on the Tarawa class, with modifications to operate more advanced aircraft and landing craft, the Wasp-class is capable of transporting almost the full strength of a United States Marine Corps Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU), and landing them in hostile territory via landing craft or helicopters as well as providing air support via AV-8B Harrier II attack aircraft or F-35B Lightning II stealth strike-fighters.

USS Bataan is a 257m-long Wasp-class amphibious assault ship having a displacement of 40,500 tons. It has a maximum speed of 22 knots, and a range of 17,600km at 18 knots. The warship was deployed during Operation Enduring Freedom after 9/11 attacks and during Iraq War.

The ship is armed with two semi-active radar-guided Nato Sea Sparrow missile systems (NSSMS) for anti-air warfare protection, two rolling airframe missile (RAM) systems and two Phalanx close-in weapon system (CIWS) mounts to counter threats from low-flying aircraft and close-in small craft.

Six super-rapid blooming offboard chaff (SRBOC) decoy system launchers augment LHD 6’s anti-ship missile defences. Three 25mm machine guns and four 12.7mm machine guns are also fitted.
