Intermarine Italian shipyard delivers El Kasseh 2 minesweeper vessel to Algerian Navy

According to naval open sources information, Algeria has ordered the first mine countermeasures vessel in late 2014 with an option for a second. The Algerian National Navy has commissioned its first mine countermeasures vessel (MCMV), El-Kasseh 1 (501) into the service on September 30, 2017. 

According to naval military sources, the El Kasseh 2 is based on the Katanpää-class vessels built for the Finnish Navy. Katanpää-class mine countermeasure vessels are a class of three multipurpose mine countermeasure vessels (MCMV) ordered by the Finnish Navy to the Italian shipyard Intermarine S.p.A.

The Intermarine minesweeper has a 52.5-meter length and 10-meter beam (for a total displacement of approximately 700 metric tons) and is powered by two diesel engines for a top speed of between 13 and 16 knots. The structure – including the hull – is built using the unstiffened monocoque single skin construction technique, with fiberglass developed specifically for this type of project. The superstructures, realized in a sandwich configuration consisting of two fiberglass and carbon fiber layers encasing a balsa core, are constructed with the resin infusion process.
