INS ‘Kochi’ was commissioned by the Hon'ble Defence Minister, Shri Manohar Parrikar, at Naval Dockyard, Mumbai, on 30 September 2015. Kochi is the second ship of the Kolkata-class (Project 15A) Guided Missile Destroyers. The contract for three ships of Kolkata class was signed as follow-on of the Delhi Class Destroyers, which were commissioned into the Indian Navy more than a decade ago.

DARPA’s Towed Airborne Lift of Naval Systems (TALONS) research effort recently demonstrated a prototype of a low-cost, fully automated parafoil system designed to extend maritime vessels’ long-distance communications and improve their domain awareness. Towed behind boats or ships, TALONS could carry intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance and communications payloads of up to 150 pounds between 500 and 1,500 feet in altitude—many times higher than current ships’ masts—and greatly extend the equipment’s range and effectiveness.

Chinese media recently released pictures showing the fourth People's Liberation Army Navy (PLAN or Chinese Navy) Type 071 amphibious transport dock LPD Yimeng Shan (hull number 978) on sea trials. Yimeng Shan was built Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding, a wholly owned subsidiary of China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC, the largest shipbuilding group in China) as was the case for the first three Type 071 vessels. It was launched in January this year.

On 15 September Norway and Australia signed an agreement where Australia will finance the development of a new capability for the seeker in the Joint Strike Missile (JSM), developed by Norwegian company Kongsberg Defence Systems (KDA). If Australia later decides to procure the JSM, then Norway and Australia will share the cost of integrating the JSM on the F-35.

According to Russian state owned news agency TASS, Russia and Egypt have signed an agreement on supplies of fifty helicopters of the Ka-52 Alligator family and Moscow does not rule out delivery of the deck-based version of these helicopters. The Ka-52K is the deck-based version of the Ka-52 Alligator combat helicopter initially developed for Mistral LHD ordered in France in 2011.

The French presidency just announced that Egypt will acquire the two Mistral LHDs originally intended for Russia. "President of the French Republic met with the President Abdel Fattah Al Sissi. On September 12, 2015, two French Navy (Marine Nationale) Super Étendard Modernisés (SEM) carrier-borne strike fighters from Flottile 17F and one ATL2 Maritime Patrol Aircraft (MPA) from Flotille 21F launched some AM39 anti-ship missiles against training targets at sea. The launch from the SEM was simultaneous as you can see in the picture below.

The French Navy took delivery of its 15th NH90 NFH “Caiman Marine” helicopter. This event took place in Marignane (Airbus Helicopters Facility) where the helicopter was built in presence of representatives of the French Navy and the French Defense Procurement Agency (DGA). This helicopter is the first aircraft delivered in Final Radar Configuration standard (FRC).

The French Navy announced that from August 26 to September 1st, a Dassault Falcon 50M Maritime Surveillance Aircraft belonging to Flottille 24F was deployed to Kangerlussuaq in western Greenland with a Royal Danish Air Force Bombardier Challenger CL-604. This deployement was a first for the French Navy naval aviation.

Russia’s heavy nuclear-powered missile cruiser Pyotr Veliky (Kirov class) has been docked for repairs in the Murmansk Region in north-west Russia, Head of the Northern Fleet’s press service Captain 1st Rank Vadim Serga said on Monday. The ship will be repaired at the 82nd shipyard in the settlement of Roslyakovo, he added.
