The
two Absalon class (HDMS Absalon & Esbern Snare) Command and Support
ships were designed by the Danish Navy and Odense Steel Shipyard. They
were commissioned in October 2004 and April 2005 respectively. The class
may be described as an hybrid between a Frigate and Military transport
ship with multi role capabilities.
Various systems onboard were installed in phases, after commissioning.
For example, the anti-ship and anti-air missiles were fitted in 2005
while the CIWS and torpedoes were fitted in 2007.
The class is fitted with a Roll-On, Roll-Off ramp and interior space
for vehicles or mission modules (such as a modular hospital). Its impressive
weapons fit (18 anti-ship missiles and 32 surface to air missiles) combined
with its excellent range and endurance (9,000 nautical miles and 28
days) and its ability to transport vehicles and troops makes it a unique
multirole class of vessel.
