"The fourth Gepard-3.9-class frigate has been put afloat. The ceremony was attended by Vietnamese officials and representatives of Russia’s arms exporter Rosoboronexport," Spiridonov said.
According to the spokesman, the frigate will stay in the shipyard’s water area until the end of summer to receive the remaining equipment. "The frigate is planned to start undergoing running trials in September 2016," Spiridonov said.
The Zelenodolsk Shipyard delivered the first two Project 11661 frigates to the Vietnamese Navy in 2011. The third Gepard-3.9-class frigate was put afloat in April 2016. The Zelenodolsk Shipyard started building Project 11661 frigates in 1990. The Project 11661 Gepard-3.9-class frigate is designed to search for and fight underwater, surface and aerial targets, carry out patrol missions and escorting operations, as well as protect the maritime economic zone. The Project 11661 frigate has a displacement of 1,500 tons. The vessel is equipped with artillery, anti-ship, air defense and antisubmarine weapons.
