Q & A with the U.S. Navy on Lockheed Martin Hellfire missiles for Littoral Combat Ships

Kongsberg Gruppen ASA (KONGSBERG) has signed a Phase III contract with the Norwegian Defence Logistics Organization (NDLO) to complete the development of the Joint Strike Missile (JSM) and prepare it for integration on the F-35 Lightning II Joint Strike Fighter (JSF). This contract is valued at NOK 1.1 billion, and comes on the heels of a bridge phase contract signed on 29 November 2013, bringing the total scope of JSM development Phase III to some NOK 1.5 billion.
The United States Navy announced in April in this year that it had selected Lockheed Martin’s Longbow Hellfire AGM-114L for the surface-to-surface missile for early increments and testing for the surface warfare (SuW) mission package for the Littoral Combat Ship (LCS). Navy Recognition recently contacted the U.S. Navy to learn more about this new capability for both types of LCSs.

US Navy and US Marine Corps testing their latest amphibious equipment during RIMPAC 2014

Held every two years by Commander, U.S. Pacific Fleet (PACFLT) and executed by Commander, U.S. 3rd Fleet (C3F), RIMPAC is a multinational maritime exercise that takes place in and around the Hawaiian Islands. This year's RIMPAC exercise is the occasion for the U.S. Navy and U.S. Marine Corps to put to the test two of their latest amphibious systems: the Mobile Landing Platform (MLP) and the Ultra Heavy-Lift Amphibious Connector (UHAC).

LIBERVIT, based in southern France, has over 20 years of experience studying, creating and developing hydraulic and mechanical tools for law enforcement, army and other civil or private rescue teams. Working closely with prestigious units such as RAID, GIGN or French Navy commandos, LIBERVIT identified a need and developped and launched a maritime range. As part of this new maritime range is the first hydraulic cutter and spreader in the world that may be used in deep water for the specific cutting and spreading needs of special forces.

Video Report: On board FREMM Normandie next generation multi-mission frigate

Navy Recognition recently had the unique opportunity to get onboard the French Navy's next state of the art frigate, the Normandie, while the ship was conducting sea trials off Toulon naval base in the Mediterranean. We already got the chance to get aboard Normandie while the vessel had just been floated out of dry-dock in Lorient, but this time it is a fully completed and functional frigate we got the chance to tour.

SMART-S Mk2 radar brings improved capabilities to French Navy anti-aircraft frigates

During DIMDEX 2014, one of the visiting naval ship was the French Navy Cassard class anti-aircraft frigate "Jean Bart". It was the first time we could see the frigate fitted with the new Thales SMART-S Mk2 radar. Navy Recognition took the opportunity to ask the French Navy what benefits this radar upgrade brings to the Cassard class of frigates.

A torpedo powered by a lithium-ion battery breaks speed records in complete safety

Early in 2013, the first sea firings of a torpedo fitted with a Li-ion battery were completed successfully: propelled completely safely at more than 50 knots, the torpedo also benefits from an endurance that can exceed one hour. It took ten years of studies, research and testing for the DCNS Saint-Tropez personnel specialised in undersea weapons, in collaboration with electrochemists from Saft*, to give practical form to this new product.

U.S. Navy Launches XFC UAV from Submerged Submarine

The U.S. Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) with funding from SwampWorks at the Office of Naval Research (ONR) and the Department of Defense Rapid Reaction Technology Office (DoD/RRTO) demonstrated the launch of an all-electric, fuel cell-powered, unmanned aerial system (UAS) from a submerged submarine. From concept to fleet demonstration, this idea took less than six years to produce results at significant cost savings when compared to traditional programs often taking decades to produce results.

A3SM: A True Game Changer for Submarines Self Defence against Threats from the Sky

As part of the Paris Air Show Navy Recognition was invited by DCNS to visit their factory located near Angoulême in southwestern France. The site specializes in the production of submarine equipment such as torpedo tubes and torpedo handling systems. It is also the place where the FREMM frigates' vertical launch systems are produced. The focus of the visit however was the A3SM, a new anti-air defence weapon system for submarine currently under development by DCNS and MBDA.

X-47B UCAS-D First Catapult Launch from USS George H.W. Bush (CVN-77) a Success

The X-47B Unmanned Combat Air System demonstrator (UCAS-D) completed its first ever carrier-based catapult launch from USS George H.W. Bush (CVN 77) off the coast of Virginia today. "Today we saw a small, but significant pixel in the future picture of our Navy as we begin integration of unmanned systems into arguably the most complex warfighting environment that exists today: the flight deck of a nuclear-powered aircraft carrier," said Vice Adm. David Buss, commander, Naval Air Forces, the Navy's "Air Boss".

Models of Royal Navy future Carrier & RFA Tanker simulate Replenishment At Sea

Two highly-accurate one-tonne scale models of HMS Queen Elizabeth and future tanker RFA Tidespring have been tested in Europe’s largest indoor water tank in Gosport to determine how the two ships can sail safely in company. Key to any future operations by the carrier – the largest warship ever to sail under the White Ensign – will be sustaining her thousands of miles from home.

DCNS Lorient Shipyard Visit and FREMM Frigates Program Update with Vincent Martinot-Lagarde

Navy Recognition was recently invited by DCNS to visit their Lorient (Brittany) based shipyard. The Lorient site specializes in surface vessel. It was the birthplace of many French Navy vessels such as Aviso type ships, the La Fayette class of frigates (and its export derivatives) and even several classes of cruisers before and after World War II. We also took this rare opportunity to sit down and ask a few questions to Vincent Martinot-Lagarde, FREMM Programs Manager.

Commonality and similarity in DAMEN SIGMA designs

SIGMA 9813 and SIGMA 10513 have 100% commonality in structure, propulsion and auxiliary systems, as the 10513 version in essence is just a lengthened version and has an extra compartment of 7.20 m by a parallel section in the amidships region. This extra compartment provides added functional spaces and some alternative accommodation spaces.
