During the naval part of the parade on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of Algeria's independence, two non-nuclear submarines of Russian construction of the Project 636.1, Djurdjura and Ouarsenis, with Club-S anti-ship missiles were demonstrated.

According to open sources, there are six submarines of different modifications of the Varshavyanka project in the fleet of the National People's Army of the People's Republic of Algeria. All of them were built at different times at the "Admiralty Shipyards" (part of the United Shipbuilding Corporation).

Previously, the Algerian Ministry of National Defence has repeatedly shown on its website videos of missile launches from Project 636.1 submarines during exercises.

On January 9, 2019, the NPA's naval submarines, numbered 031 and 032, named Ouarsenis and Hoggar respectively, were inducted into the fleet. They carry Club-S missiles. With the introduction of these submarines, the Algerian Navy has six Russian-built submarines of projects 877 and 636.

About Russian Project 636 submarines

On the basis of Project 877, the Rubin Central Design Bureau developed Project 636, differing in terms of the equipment to be installed and hull modifications. About three dozen items of equipment and systems were specially developed for Project 636.

The Project 636 diesel-electric submarine was designed for destroying ground targets, fighting against enemy submarines and surface ships, protecting naval bases, sea coasts, and marine communications, and solving reconnaissance and other tasks. Various modifications to Project 636 emerged as a result of improvements.

The project 636.1 diesel submarine is designated for destroying ground targets, fighting against enemy`s underwater and surface ships, protecting naval bases, sea coasts, and sea communications, for reconnaissance and other missions. The submarine is equipped with the CLUB-S missile system.

Project 636.3 submarines have a higher (as compared to the previous projects) combat effectiveness. The optimum combination of acoustic stealth and target detection range, the latest inertial navigation system, modern automated information, and control system, and powerful high-speed torpedo-missile armament ensure the global priority of the ships of this class in the field of non-nuclear submarine construction.
