NAVDEX 2023: Italy Navy showcases FREMM frigate Carlo Bergamini


The Italian Navy sent its Carlo Bergamini class (FREMM) frigate Carlo Bergamini during the NAVDEX exhibition. The ship was docked at the Zayed Port in Abu Dhabi.

The Carlo Bergamini-class frigate is a modern and highly capable warship used by the Italian Navy. With a displacement of 6,700 tons and a length of 144.6 meters, this frigate is equipped with advanced technologies and armaments to fulfill various missions.

The frigate is powered by a CODLAG propulsion system, consisting of a 32 MW gas turbine and two 2.5 MW electric motors, as well as four diesel generators. This allows it to achieve a maximum speed of 27 knots and a range of 6,800 nautical miles at a speed of 15 knots.

The Carlo Bergamini-class frigate has a complement of 199 personnel and is equipped with advanced sensors and processing systems, including the Leonardo Kronos Grand Naval (MFRA) Active electronically scanned array radar, CAPTAS-4 towed-array sonar, and UMS 4110 CL hull-mounted sonar.

In terms of armament, the frigate features a 16-cell MBDA SYLVER A50 VLS for 16 MBDA Aster 15 and 30 missiles, a Leonardo Otobreda 127/64 Vulcano, a Leonardo OTO Melara 76/62 mm Davide/Strales CIWS gun, two Leonardo Oto Melara/Oerlikon KBA 25/80 mm remote weapon systems, and eight MBDA Teseo\Otomat Mk-2/A anti-ship and land attack missiles. Additionally, it is equipped with two triple Leonardo (WASS) B-515/3 launcher for MU 90 torpedoes and two SITEP MASS CS-424 acoustic guns.

The Carlo Bergamini-class frigate has a double hangar and can carry up to three helicopters, including two SH90 and one AW101 armed with MU 90 torpedoes or MBDA Marte Mk2/S missiles.

Overall, the Carlo Bergamini-class frigate is a highly capable and versatile warship that can carry out a wide range of missions, including anti-air, anti-surface, and anti-submarine warfare, as well as maritime security and patrol operations.
