Commissioning of Russian Frigate Admiral Gorshkov Delayed Until End of Summer

Test trials of the antiaircraft weapon of the Admiral Gorshkov frigate will continue at a range for another 1.5 months. After that the weapon is to be returned to the warship for continued trials, President of the United Shipbuilding Corporation Alexey Rakhmanov said.

"According to our information, the trials will take another 1.5 months before tests on the warship. The antiaircraft complex is being tested at ranges and has to return to the warship for fire trials from the frigate after it," he said.

The frigate has to be handed over to the Navy in summer, he added.

"If everything is OK, the frigate has all the chances to become operational by the end of summer," Rakhmanov said.

The Admiral Gorshkov is the lead ship of project 22350. It was laid in early 2006 and floated in the autumn of 2010. In November 2014 the frigate began test trials. The necessity to test all the systems, including the antiaircraft weapon, was cited as the reason for the delay in commissioning the frigate.

Commments by Navy Recogniton
We previsouly reported about issues with the Admiral Gorshkov's air defence system back in December 2017. Almaz-Antey aerospace defense group Designer General Pavel Sozinov said last year that Russia’s Poliment-Redut seaborne missile system will be armed with three types of missiles unified with the S-350 Vityaz ground-based air defense system.

Worst, while the first Project 22350 frigate entered the "final stage" of state tests in March 2017, the vessel encountered engine issues last month (February 2018). State tests are the Russian Navy equivalent to acceptance trials.
