Mare Island Dry Dock is awarded contract for mid-term availability of the fleet replenishment oiler USNS Henry J. Kaiser

According to a contract released by the U.S. DoD (Department of Defense) on August 28, 2020, Mare Island Dry Dock, Vallejo, California, is awarded a $15,378,728, 50-calendar day, firm-fixed-price contract (N32205-20-C-4066) for the mid-term availability of the fleet replenishment oiler USNS Henry J. Kaiser (T-AO 187).

The $15,378,728 contract consists of the amounts listed in the following areas: Category “A” work item cost, additional government requirement, other direct costs and the general and administrative costs. Work will include forward and port side superstructure preservation and steel repairs, ballast tank preservation forepeak, flight deck non-skid renewal, miscellaneous steel repairs, tank preservation 1S, 8C and 10C, main engine 12,000-hour overhaul, multiple cable transit repair, marine sanitation device tank replacement, number 4 ship service diesel generators resilient engine mount replacement and vent plenum preservation.

The contract includes options which, if exercised, would bring the total value to $16,715,800. Work will be performed in Vallejo, California. Expected period of performance is Oct. 14, 2020, through December 2, 2020.

The USNS Henry J. Kaiser (T-AO-187) is a United States Navy replenishment oiler and the lead ship of her class. She is operated by Military Sealift Command and therefore has a "USNS" prefix for United States Naval Ship.

The Henry J. Kaiser class is an American class of eighteen fleet replenishment oilers which began construction in August 1984. The class comprises fifteen oilers which are operated by Military Sealift Command to provide underway replenishment of fuel to United States Navy combat ships and jet fuel for aircraft aboard aircraft carriers at sea.

The Henry J. Kaiser class has an overall length of 206.5 m, a beam of 29.7 m, and a maximum draft of 11m. The full load displacement of the ship is 41,353t. The ship can complement 89 civilian crew (19 officers), six US Navy personnel and 29 spare personnel.

The USNS Henry J. Kaiser is armed with 2 or more 50 caliber machine guns and space and weight arrangements were made for installing two Phalanx close-in weapon systems (CIWS). It has a large helicopter landing platform but lacks hangar and maintenance facilities for an embarked helicopter.
