South Korea to develop batch IV of Ulsan-class multi-purpose guided missile frigate

The Ulsan-class is a multi-purpose guided missile frigate built by the Republic of Korea. The ship is in service with the Republic of Korea Navy and the Bangladesh Navy. She is built by the by Hyundai Heavy Industries Co., Ltd. and Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering Co., Ltd.

Flight I of the Ulsan-class frigate was launched in April 1980 and decommissioned in December 2014. Currently, four Ulsan-class Flight III frigates are in service with the South Korean Navy.

The Ulsan-class frigate is powered by a combined diesel or gas (CODOG) propulsion system that includes two General Electric LM-2500 and two MTU 12V 956 TB82 engines. The ship can reach a top speed of 34 knots (63 km/h) with a maximum cruising range of 8,000 nautical miles at 16 knots (30 km/h).

The Ulsan-class frigate has a length of 103,7 m, a beam of 12.5 m, a draught of 3.98 m and a fully loaded displacement of 2,180 tons. She has a complement of 186 sailors including 16 officers.

The Ulan-class frigate is armed with eight Harpoon (2 quadruple launchers) anti-ship missiles, six 324 mm (12.8 in) Blue Shark torpedo (2 triple tubes), two Otobreda 76 mm (3 in)/62 cal. naval gun, and four Otobreda 40 mm (1.6 in)/70 cal. (2 twin) compact CIWS (Close-In Weapon System).
