Working hand-in-hand with their customers, Babcock’s key asset management activities include deep maintenance, in-service support, equipment and systems support, and through-life engineering of naval assets across the globe.

Babcock will draw on this significant experience to provide Marinha do Brasil with a support solution that will enable them to deliver international operations.

The through-life support package will see Babcock deliver maintenance planning and delivery, technical advice, and knowledge transfer. Babcock will also assist the Marinha do Brasil to develop a spares management system for the ship, deliver a range of technical training packages to personnel on-board and at the naval base, as well as developing and installing upgrades on the ship.

An in-country team will be embedded within the Arsenal de Marinha do Rio de Janeiro, the main maintenance center and naval base of the Brazilian Navy, to deliver this package of work, supported by a team based in the UK who will provide technical support from the wider Babcock business.

Support has already commenced with an in-country presence established ahead of the first maintenance period, scheduled to begin in April 2022.

NAM Atlântico was commissioned on 30 September 1998 as HMS Ocean, serving until being decommissioned on 27 March 2018, and then commissioned into service with Brazil the following June.

The ship can reach a cruise speed of 10 (12 mph; 19 km/h) knots and a top speed of 18 knots (21 mph; 33 km/h) with a maximum cruising range of 8,000 miles (13,000 km).

The NAM Atlântico is powered by two Crossley Pielstick 16 PC2.6 V 200 medium-speed diesel engines, rated at 23,904hp, with two independent shafts and a five-bladed fixed-pitch propeller.
