Republic of Korea Navy to join Indian led naval exercise


According to information published by Yonhap News Agency on February 22, 2022, the new Republic of Korea Navy Incheon-class frigate Gwangju (FFG-817), with around 100 troops on board, is heading to the Indian Ocean.

ROKS Gwangju (FFG-817) is the sixth ship of the Incheon-class frigate in the Republic of Korea Navy. She is named after the city, Gwangju. ROKS Gwangju was launched on 11 August 2015 by STX Offshore & Shipbuilding and was commissioned on 9 November 2016.

The Incheon-class frigates, also known as the Future Frigate eXperimental or FFX during development, are coastal defense frigates of the Republic of Korea Navy. The lead ship was launched on 29 April 2011.

The Incheon-class frigate's main gun is the 127mm/L62 Mk. 45 Mod 4 naval gun. Point-defense armaments include a single 20 mm Phalanx CIWS and a RIM-116 Rolling Airframe Missile Block 1 21-round launcher.

The anti-submarine warfare armaments consist of K745 LW Cheong Sahng-uh (Blue Shark) torpedoes. Anti-ship capability is provided by SSM-700K Haeseong (Sea Star) long-range anti-ship missiles.
