Future Philippine Navy's Shaldag-class patrol boat tests its Typhoon 30mm cannon

According to information published by the Philippines News Agency on July 4, 2022, the Philippine Navy's first two patrol boat (FAIC-Ms) test-fired their Typhoon 30mm cannon in Israel.

Ordered by the Philippine Navy from Israel Shipyards to eventually replace the Tomas Batilo-class fast attack crafts. Twelve were originally planned but only eight were initially funded as part of the Navy's procurement plan from 2018 to 2022.

Four of the boats are built in Israel and feature missile armament using the Rafael Spike NLOS short-range surface-to-surface missile, while the other four will be built in the PN's Cavite Naval Yard under a technology transfer agreement and will only be fitted for but not with the missile system. An additional 1 unit was negotiated by the Philippine Navy, although it will not have missile systems. All are fitted with remote gun systems from Rafael.

About Typhoon Weapon Station

The Typhoon is a type of remote weapon station manufactured by Rafael Advanced Defense Systems of Israel, and it shares similar design principles and common technologies with Samson Remote Controlled Weapon Station (Samson RCWS), a land-based system manufactured by the same developer. Like Samson RCWS, Typhoon is also multi-configurable.

The Typhoon, and its lightweight variant, Mini Typhoon, are used by the Israeli Navy, Indian Navy, Royal Australian Navy, Royal New Zealand Navy, the Republic of Singapore Navy, Sri Lankan Navy, and Singapore's Police Coast Guard.

The cannon system mounted can be an ATK, Oerlikon, Mauser, or Giat model in the 20–30 mm caliber range. Between 160 and 210 rounds are carried on the mounting, depending on the caliber.

The mount can traverse 120° to either side and elevate between -12.5° and 40.5°. The weight of a complete system is between 690 and 750 kilograms (1,520 and 1,650 lb) without ammunition, depending on the guns and sensors mounted.
