US Navy's Arleigh Burke-class destroyer USS Bainbridge visits Turkey


According to information published by the U.S. Navy on July 19, 2022, the Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer USS Bainbridge (DDG 96) arrived in Aksaz, Turkey for a scheduled port visit.

The ship’s visit comes after several weeks of training and interoperability with the French and Italian navies, as the allied ships showcased firepower and maneuvering capabilities.

Bainbridge is attached to the Harry S. Truman Carrier Strike Group (HSTCSG) and is on a scheduled deployment in the U.S. Naval Forces Europe area of operations, employed by the U.S. Sixth Fleet to defend U.S., allied, and partner interests.

USS Bainbridge (DDG-96) is an Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer in the United States Navy. She is the fifth ship to carry that name, and the 46th destroyer of a planned 75-ship class.

The Arleigh Burke Flight IIA ships have several new features, beginning with USS Oscar Austin (DDG-79). Among the changes is the addition of two hangars for antisubmarine warfare (ASW) helicopters, and a new, longer 5-inch/62-caliber (127 mm) Mark 45 Mod 4 naval gun (installed onto USS Winston S. Churchill (DDG-81) and later ships).

The nearly 9,500-ton USS Bainbridge is 509.5 feet in length, has a waterline beam of 59 feet, and a navigational draft of 31 feet. Four gas turbine engines will power the ship to speeds in excess of 30 knots.
