Russian Black Sea Fleet oldest submarine Alrosa armed with Kalibr missiles to undergo sea trials soon

SEVASTOPOL, June 28. /TASS-DEFENSE/. The Black Sea Fleet’s oldest submarine, the Alrosa, will go to sea for the first time over the past eight years for performance trials after repairs and upgrade, the Black Sea Fleet’s 13th ship repair plant told TASS.

Earlier, a military source in Sevastopol said that the submarine had been upgraded to carry Kalibr cruise missiles. “The submarine is completely ready for shipbuilder's sea trials that will start soon,” the source said.

The Alrosa was built in the city of Gorky (currently Nizhny Novgorod) at the Krasnoye Sormovo Shipyard shortly before the collapse of the Soviet Union. It belonged to experimental Project 877. It was driven by a waterjet engine instead of propeller propulsion, which made it very quiet and hard to notice. Owing to this, the submarine with waterjet engines is called a 'black hole' abroad. Soon after the break-up of the Soviet Union, the Alrosa remained Russia’s sole combat-ready submarine in the Black Sea.

In early May, it was reported that the submarine’s repairs had been completed. Alrosa acquired new combat and technical capabilities, which “put it on a par with the six submarines that have joined the Black Sea Fleet in recent years”.

MOSCOW, June 28. /TASS-DEFENSE/. The second serial Project 885M multipurpose nuclear-powered submarine Krasnoyarsk (NATO reporting name: Severodvinsk-class) currently under construction at the Sevmash Shipyard in Severodvinsk set out for its first sea trials in the White Sea, a source in the shipbuilding industry told TASS.

“On June 26, the Krasnoyarsk sub left the Sevmash Shipyard for the first shipbuilders sea trials in the White Sea. Its onboard equipment and compliance of its seaworthiness and performance characteristics with the designed parameters will be tested at sea,” the source said.

After that, as the source specified, the Krasnoyarsk sub will undergo state tests where all of its weapons will be checked in practice. The press office of the Sevmash Shipyard refused to comment for TASS. In February 2022, a source told TASS that the sub would start its shipbuilders sea trials in early June.

The Krasnoyarsk is the second serial-produced and third-built Project 885M (Yasen-M) submarine. It was laid down in 2014 and launched on July 30, 2021.

The submarine was developed by the St. Petersburg-based Malakhit Design Bureau. Currently, six Project 885M submarines are at various stages of their construction at the Sevmash Shipyard. The Project 885M lead nuclear-powered submarine Kazan was delivered to the Russian Navy on May 7, 2021. Project 885/885M submarines are armed with Kalibr-PL (SS-N-27 Sizzler) and Onyx (SS-N-26 Strobile) cruise missiles as their basic strike weapons.
