The modernization has been carried out at Saab’s shipyard in Karlskrona and is the largest change the ship has gone through during her lifetime. In parallel, her sister-ship HMS Sundsvall is going through the same modifications and will be delivered in 2022.

The modernization of HMS Gävle includes a number of new systems. The vessel will have, among other things, a new torpedo guidance system, a new all-purpose gun (57 mm. Mk3B), and a new towed array sonar that will be integrated into a completely new guidance support system.

She is also equipped with a modified reconnaissance radar with a built-in recognition system. The reconnaissance radar is a so-called 3D radar and it measures, in addition to bearing and distance, also the height of targets. Similar radars are also in service on the Visby-class corvettes.

HSwMS Gävle (K22) is a Swedish Navy Göteborg-class corvette, named after the Swedish city of Gävle. The ship was launched on 23 March 1990 at Karlskrona and entered naval service on 17 September 1990.

The Göteborg class is a class of corvettes in the Swedish Navy, built between 1986 and 1993. The class was originally designed to destroy Soviet submarines and surface vessels, and is armed with eight RBS-15 anti-ship missiles, torpedoes, one 57 mm cannon and one 40 mm cannon.

The class has a length of 57 m (187 ft 0 in), a beam of 8 m (26 ft 3 in), and a draft of 2 m (6 ft 7 in). She can reach a top speed of 30 knots (56 km/h; 35 mph).
