US Navy's Ronald Reagan CSG conducts exercise with South Korea


According to information published by the US DoD on September 27, 2022, the Ronald Reagan Carrier Strike Group (CSG) began a series of exercises in the East Sea with the Republic of Korea (ROK) Navy, to strengthen maritime interoperability and tactics, techniques and procedures.

The U.S. routinely conducts CSG operations in the waters around the Republic of Korea to exercise maritime maneuvers, strengthen the ROK-U.S. alliance, and improve regional security.

U.S. Navy units participating in this Maritime Counter-Special Operations Exercise (MCSOFEX) are the aircraft carrier USS Ronald Reagan (CVN 76), Carrier Air Wing (CVW) Five, USS Chancellorsville (CG 62), USS Barry (DDG 52), USS Benfold (DDG 65) and staff from Destroyer Squadron (DESRON) 15 and Carrier Strike Group (CSG) Five.

The exercises are defensive in nature and consist of routine bilateral training, subject matter expert exchanges, anti-submarine and anti-surface warfare drills, communication drills, air defense exercises, boarding drills, and combined live fires, as well as formation sailing. Additional U.S. Navy commands participating included Commander, Task Force (CTF) 72 and Commander, Task Force (CTF) 74.

From the U.S. Army, the 2nd Combat Air Brigade and U.S. Air Force’s 7th Air Force, joined with units from U.S. Special Operations Command Korea for the exercises.

About the USS Chancellorsville

USS Chancellorsville (CG-62) is a Ticonderoga-class guided-missile cruiser in service in the United States Navy. Until 30 December 2011, the ship was operationally part of Carrier Strike Group Seven.

In 2010 she was administratively under the command of Commander, Naval Surface Forces Pacific. Currently she is assigned to Carrier Strike Group Five and is deployed to Yokosuka, Japan.

Chancellorsville carries guided missiles and rapid-fire cannons, with anti-air, anti-surface, and anti-subsurface capabilities. She also carries two Seahawk Light airborne multi-purpose system (LAMPS) helicopters, focused on anti-submarine warfare.

The cruiser has a length of 567 feet (173 m), a beam of 55 feet (16.8 meters), and a draught of 34 feet (10.2 meters). She can reach a top speed of 32 knots (60 km/h; 37.4 mph).

The ship is armed with 2 × 61 cell Mk 41 vertical launch systems containing 122 × mix of RIM-66M-5 Standard SM-2MR Block IIIB, RIM-156A SM-2ER Block IV, RIM-161 SM-3, RIM-162A ESSM, RIM-174A Standard ERAM surface-to-air missiles, BGM-109 Tomahawk cruise missiles or RUM-139A VL-ASROC anti-submarine missiles.

She is also armed with RGM-84 Harpoon missiles, two 5 in (127 mm)/62 caliber Mark 45 Mod 4 lightweight gun, two 25 mm (0.98 in) Mk 38 gun, tow to four .50 in (12.7 mm) cal. machine gun, two Phalanx CIWS Block 1B and two Mk 32 12.75 in (324 mm) triple torpedo tubes.
