The submarine's drills were supported by small anti-submarine warfare ships, rescue, and tug vessels from the Baltiysk naval base.

The Russian Navy has a significant presence in the Baltic Sea, with several bases located along the coastlines of Russia and its Kaliningrad exclave. These bases provide strategic access to the sea, allowing for greater flexibility in operations and the ability to project power beyond Russia's borders.

About the Improved Kilo class

The Project 636 Varshavyanka submarine is a third-generation diesel-electric submarine (DEPL). She was designed by Yu.N. Kormilitsin and is also known as "Improved Kilo" according to NATO classification.

The submarine has a surface speed of 11-17 knots and a submerged speed of 18-20 knots. Her operational depth is 240 m and her maximum depth is 300 m. The submarine has an endurance of 45 days and a crew of 52 people, including 12 officers. The cost of the submarine is $300 million for export (2009).

The dimensions of the submarine are as follows: the surface displacement is 2350 t, while the submerged displacement is 3950 t. The length of the submarine is 73.8 m (measured along the waterline), her maximum width is 9.9 m, and the average draft is 6.2 m (measured along the waterline).

The submarine's powerplant is electric and consists of two diesel generators producing 1000 kW each, a main electric motor with 5500 hp, an economical motor with 190 hp, and two backup electric motors each with 102 hp. The submarine is propelled by a seven-bladed low-speed propeller.

The submarine is armed with six bow torpedo tubes with a caliber of 533 mm, normally charged, with automatic reloading. It can carry 18 torpedoes (6 in tubes) or 24 mines. In addition, the submarine is equipped with Caliber cruise missiles, including anti-ship and anti-submarine missiles (3M54K, 3M54K1, 91R1 for export 3M54KE, 3M54KE1, 91RE1) and land attack missiles (3M14K for export 3M14KE), replacing some of the torpedoes. The submarine is also equipped with Igla-1 and Verba MANPADS with 8 missiles for air defense.
