US Arleigh Burke class destroyer USS John Finn conducts drills with South Korea Navy

The ship was ordered on June 15, 2011, and was built by Ingalls Shipbuilding. She was laid down on November 5, 2013, and launched on March 28, 2015.

The destroyer was christened on May 2, 2015, and acquired by the Navy on December 7, 2016. She was commissioned on July 15, 2017, and is currently homeported in San Diego.

The USS John Finn has a displacement of 9,217 tons at full load and is 513 feet (156 meters) long with a beam (width) of 66 feet (20 meters). She is powered by four General Electric LM2500 gas turbines, providing a speed of 30 knots (56 km/h; 35 mph). The ship has a complement of 380 officers and enlisted personnel.

In terms of armament, the Arleigh Burke-class destroyer is equipped with a variety of guns, missiles, and torpedoes. She has a 5-inch (127 mm)/62 Mk 45 Mod 4 lightweight gun, a 20 mm Phalanx CIWS, two 25 mm Mk 38 Machine Gun Systems, and four .50 caliber (12.7 mm) guns.

The destroyer also has a number of missile systems, including a 32-cell and a 64-cell Mk 41 Vertical Launching System (VLS) capable of launching a variety of surface-to-air missiles, anti-ballistic missiles, and cruise missiles.

Additionally, the ship carries two Mark 32 triple torpedo tubes capable of launching Mark 46, Mark 50, and Mark 54 lightweight torpedoes. The Arleigh Burke-class destroyer also has the Optical Dazzling Interdictor, Navy (ODIN) laser system for non-lethal deterrence.

The ship can carry up to two MH-60R Seahawk helicopters, which can be used for a variety of purposes, including anti-submarine warfare, search and rescue, and utility transport.
