Indonesia Navy commissions 2 new Pulau Fani class MCMVs.

According to information published by the Indonesian MoD on August 16, 2023, the Navy commissions the two new Pulau Fani class (modified Frankenthal class) mine countermeasures vessels KRI Pulau Fani and KRI Pulau Fanildo.

During the ceremony, the Chief of the Naval Staff noted that these two ships, made in Germany, are constructed from non-magnetic steel and possess a degaussing system to reduce ship magnetism.

They feature an electric motor propulsion system to minimize noise and come equipped with Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (UAVs) for underwater detection tasks.

Additionally, these vessels have unmanned surface vehicles (USVs) designed for cleaning and sweeping mines from the ocean's surface. These minehunters also feature platforms for Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROVs) and underwater sonar equipment for detecting underwater threats.

Previously, in Lemwerder, Germany, a Deputy Defense Minister signed the handover of these two minehunters to the Naval Forces. The Chief of the Naval Staff then handed them over to the Commander of Armada II to enhance the naval fleet, specifically under the Mine Vessel Unit of Koarmada II.

Technical data about the Frankenthal-class minehunter

The MCMV has a displacement of 650 tons and measures 54.4 meters (178 feet) in length, with a beam of 9.2 meters (30 feet) and a draft of 2.6 meters (8 feet 6 inches).

Propulsion is achieved through the use of 2 MTU 16V 538 TB91 diesel engines, each capable of producing 2040 kW, alongside 2 electric motors designed for slow and silent maneuvering. This is supported by 2 Renk PLS 25 E gearboxes and 2 controllable pitch propellers, allowing for a speed of 18 knots (33 km/h; 21 mph).
