The Double Eagle SAROV, a key player in the family of underwater vehicles, is recognized for its operational efficiency and safety in mine countermeasure (MCM) missions globally. This vehicle offers dual capabilities: functioning as an Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV) for detection, classification, and identification, as well as a Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) for mine disposal. The acquisition of this advanced system by the US Navy, under the Foreign Military Sales (FMS) program, is intended to enhance the capabilities of the Kuwait Naval Force.

The Double Eagle SAROV's design and sophisticated sensors allow it to provide multifunctional capabilities for MCM operators. The system is hydro-dynamically stable and highly reliable, delivering both exceptional performance and low lifecycle cost.

The Double Eagle SAROV package enhances the capabilities of the Double Eagle family of ROVs and creates an AUV/ROV hybrid. The vehicle can be operated as an ROV using two different tethers. One is a thin fiber tether for real-time communication and long-range missions (>3 km) while the vehicle is powered by its internal battery. Alternatively, a combined power and communication tether can be used, with a standard length of 1,000 m for endurance missions. However, the package enables the SAROV to be operated both with and without a tether, thereby increasing its range and versatility. The Double Eagle SAROV package has an operational depth of 300m and a payload capacity of 250kg.

Developed and produced at Saab's facility in Linköping, Sweden, this contract signifies not only a major expansion of Swedish defense technology into the US market but also marks a significant milestone in Saab’s global production strategy. Saab Inc.'s Autonomous and Undersea Systems Division in the United States will closely collaborate with other production sites in Sweden, the United Kingdom, and Denmark in manufacturing parts of this sophisticated system.

Erik Smith, President and CEO of Saab in the US, expressed his enthusiasm for introducing this undersea vehicle capability to the United States. He emphasized the establishment of a highly experienced team of undersea vehicle experts and the creation of significant new production capabilities within Saab, positioning the company for greater expansion in the US market.

Finally, one of the notable features of the Double Eagle systems is their high maneuverability and adaptability. They can be launched from a variety of platforms, including ships, shorelines, or even craft of opportunity. Additionally, these systems are designed for easy deployment, as they can be housed in standard containers, making them an ideal solution for rapid response to mine threats in various environments.
