The D'Entrecasteaux class is a versatile class of oceanic patrol ships designed to perform multiple missions for the French Navy. The ships are equipped to perform sovereignty, law enforcement, and logistics tasks, such as policing illegal fishing, controlling offshore traffic, assisting in search and rescue operations, and supporting the logistics of French overseas territories.

The class was designed to replace the aging BATRAL-class landing ships and perform similar roles as the four Loire-class ships in Metropolitan France. Initially, three units were planned, but a fourth was added in 2015 to cover the Mozambique Channel. The first Bâtiment multi-mission (B2M) ship, named d'Entrecasteaux, was delivered in March 2016.

The D'Entrecasteaux-class ships are 65 meters long, 14 meters wide, and have a draft of 4.2 meters. They have a displacement of 1,500 tonnes when empty and 2,300 tonnes when fully loaded.

They are capable of reaching a top speed of 15 knots, or 28 km/h. The complement of these ships is 20, and they can accommodate 20 troops. The ships are armed with two 7.62 mm guns and also have a 12-tonne crane.
