Malaysian Navy's Lekiu class frigate KD Lekiu to participate in exercise Aman 2023


According to information published by the Malaysian MoD on January 30, 2023, the Royal Malaysian Navy's Lekiu class frigate KD Lekiu will participate in the Pakistani Exercise Aman 2023.

Exercise AMAN is the premier multinational maritime exercise of the Pakistan Navy which has been conducted biennially since 2007. The exercise is conducted with the aim to develop synergy between participating naval units to tackle maritime security challenges by enhancing interoperability between regional and extra-regional navies at different levels of technological prowess. The eighth series of Exercise AMAN will be held in Karachi from February 10 to 14, 2023.

About the KD Lekiu

The ship is a Lekiu-class frigate with a full load displacement of 2,270 long tons. The length of the frigate is 106 meters and has a beam of 12.8 meters. She is powered by 4 diesels with a combined output of 16,000 bhp and has a top speed of 28 knots. The frigate has a complement of 146 crew members with 18 officers.

The Lekiu-class frigate is equipped with various sensors and processing systems including a BAE Systems Insyte Nautis F combat data system, Ericsson Sea Giraffe-150 surface search radar, Thales Netherlands air search radar, Thales Defense I-band navigation radar, Marconi 1802SW fire control radar, and a Thales Underwater Systems Spherion TSM 2633 LF sonar.

The armament of the frigate includes a Bofors 57 mm gun, MSI DS30B 30 mm cannon, 16 vertical launch systems for Sea Wolf SAM, 8 Exocet MM40 Block 2 SSMs, and 2 triple Eurotorp B515 with A244-S ASW torpedoes. The frigate can carry 1 Super Lynx 300 helicopter and has a stern hangar and helicopter landing platform.
