The visiting German Defence Minister, Boris Pistorius, discussed the progress of a deal for the procurement of six advanced conventional submarines by the Indian Navy under Project-75I during his talks with Defence Minister Rajnath Singh.

Pistorius made a strong pitch for German company Thyssenkrupp Marine Systems (TKMS) and stated that the submarine deal could become a "flagship project."

He expressed Germany's support for the "Make in India" initiative and emphasized the need for cooperation between companies on both sides. The P-75I deal, expected to cost over ₹45,000 crore, is likely to be won by Germany, as they and South Korea are the only countries that technically meet the bidding criteria.

The German Defence Minister also discussed the issue of global supply chain disruptions and India's request for Germany to diversify its supply chains to stable and open countries like India.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh invited German investments in Uttar Pradesh and Tamil Nadu defence corridors and highlighted the potential for collaboration between the Indian and German defence industries.

During his visit, Minister Pistorius also interacted with Indian defence start-ups and discussed the promotion of co-development and co-production between Indian and German start-ups.

Additionally, the two Ministers discussed the German and European role in the Indo-Pacific, with Pistorius stating the importance of strategic partnerships to ensure free navigation and trading routes in the region. Germany has announced plans to send two warships to the Indo-Pacific in 2024 as part of its commitment to upholding the rules-based international order and protecting major maritime passages.
