The classified information revealed a meticulous plan by a six-member Ukrainian team to launch an underwater attack on the pipeline. The team, reporting directly to Gen. Valery Zaluzhny, Ukraine’s highest-ranking military officer, planned to deploy shortly after a major allied naval exercise, BALTOPS, in June 2022. However, for reasons not yet clear, this operation was put on hold.

The postponed operation and the September Nord Stream bombing share striking resemblances. According to the June intelligence report, the Ukrainian operatives intended to use a submersible vehicle and a mix of oxygen and helium for a deep-sea dive to inflict damage on the pipeline.

German investigators probing the September bombing found that a group using fake passports and a rented yacht had planted explosives on the pipeline, with the nature of the operation indicating that the perpetrators were experienced divers.

Despite differences between the two incidents - such as the intended target (Nord Stream 1 in June and Nord Stream 1 and 2 in September) and the departure location - the commonalities have raised questions about Kyiv's potential involvement in both incidents.

Information summary

It's been almost two years since the Nord Stream 1 and 2 gas pipelines were sabotaged, and yet nothing is certain. However, two leads seem to be emerging.

We have just mentioned the latest developments concerning the Ukrainian lead. A few months ago, OSINT researchers suggested Russian involvement via the Kashtan-class rescue ship SS-750 carrying the mini-submarine AS-26.

The Danish authorities had confirmed the presence of this vessel and 25 others shortly before the sabotage of the gas pipelines.
