US Navy's USS Hershel Woody Williams helps Türkiye after earthquake


According to information published by the US DoD on March 1, 2023, USS Hershel “Woody” Williams (ESB 4) arrived in Mersin, Türkiye to deliver disaster relief supplies to Turkish officials for those affected by the Feb. 6 earthquakes.

While operating in the U.S. Sixth Fleet area of operations, the Hershel “Woody” Williams’ crew took on over 100 pallets of supplies consisting of hygiene products, clothes, blankets, cots, comfort kits, and more.

After coordinating with Commander, Task Force 63 (CTF-63), the crew was tasked with organizing the pallets so the supplies could be expeditiously delivered to those in need.

Following a 7.8 magnitude earthquake that struck Türkiye on Feb. 6, 2023, U.S. military forces assigned to U.S. European Command are providing humanitarian assistance and disaster relief in support of U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), the Bureau of Humanitarian Assistance (BHA), and the international community to Turkish people during this tragedy.

The USS Hershel "Woody" Williams (ESB-4) is a Lewis B. Puller-class expeditionary mobile base ship that was commissioned into service with the United States Navy in March 2020.

This Lewis B. Puller-class vessel measures an impressive 784 feet (239 meters) in length and can carry a variety of equipment to meet its mission objectives.

The ship's complement includes 19 officers and 231 enlisted personnel, who operate the ship and provide support for mission activities. She can carry a combination of MH-53 and MH-60 helicopters to support air operations.
