India Navy destroyer INS Mormugao fires Brahmos missile for first time

The INS Mormugao is a highly advanced guided missile destroyer in the Indian Navy. She is part of the Visakhapatnam-class destroyers, which are improved versions of the Kolkata-class destroyers.

This ship has an impressive displacement of 7,400 tons and a length of 163 meters. With a beam of 17.4 meters and a draft of 6.5 meters, it's a sizable vessel.

Her propulsion system is based on COGAG (Combined Gas and Gas) technology, featuring two Zorya M36E gas turbines, four DT-59 reversible gas turbines, two RG-54 gearboxes, and two Bergen/GRSE KVM-diesel engines. She also has four 1 MWe Wärtsilä WCM-1000 generator sets driving Cummins KTA50G3 engines and Kirloskar 1 MV AC generators.

The Mormugao is capable of speeds in excess of 30 knots, and it has a range of 4,000 nautical miles when traveling at 18 knots. It can maintain operations for up to 45 days, and it carries four rigid-hulled inflatable boats (RHIBs). The crew is composed of 300 personnel, including 50 officers and 250 sailors.

The Mormugao is equipped with a variety of advanced radar and sonar systems, including the IAI EL/M-2248 MF-STAR S-Band AESA radar, BEL RAWL-02/LW-08 L-Band air-search radar, and Terma/Tata Scanter-6002 X-Band surface-search radar. Its sonar systems include the BEL HUMSA-NG active/passive sonar and the BEL "Nagin" active towed-array sonar.

The ship's armament includes 32 Barak 8 surface-to-air missiles, 16 BrahMos anti-ship missiles, 4 533mm torpedo tubes, and 2 RBU-6000 anti-submarine rocket launchers.

She also carries a variety of guns, including an OTO Melara 76mm naval gun, 4 AK-630M CIWS, and 2 OFT 12.7mm M2 Stabilized Remote Controlled Guns.
