Huntington Ingalls Industries wins $23 million contract for Lionfish UUV for Navy.

According to information published by the US DoD on November 20, 2023, Huntington Ingalls Industries Unmanned Systems, based in Pocasset, Massachusetts, has been awarded a $23,004,606 modification to a prior contract for the production of Lionfish Small Unmanned Undersea Vehicles, based on the Remus 300.

The REMUS 300 Unmanned Underwater Vehicle (UUV) weighs 56 kg and measures 2.3 meters in length with a 19 cm diameter, featuring a modularity that allows it to adapt to various mission needs.

This UUV retains the hull design of the REMUS 100 but includes enhancements for improved performance, such as a more robust structure, advanced sensors, a data distribution system, and an open architecture for easy integration of new modules.

The REMUS 300 is equipped with a suite of sensors to support a range of missions. These include a dual-frequency side-scan sonar, a conductivity and temperature sensor, and a depth sensor. It also offers the flexibility to integrate third-party payloads and autonomy through its software and hardware development kits.

For navigation and communication, the REMUS 300 uses an inertial navigation system, a baseline GPS, and doppler-assisted dead reckoning. It communicates underwater via a micro-modem and also includes Wi-Fi and an optional satellite communication system.

Propulsion is provided by a direct-drive DC brushless motor, and the vehicle is controlled by a Cruciform fin system. It can be equipped with lithium-ion batteries of various capacities, providing different levels of endurance and recharge times.

The REMUS 300 can dive up to 305 meters and has a maximum speed of 5 knots. It offers a standard range of 110 km, which extends to 165 km in its long-endurance version.
