DIMDEX 2024: Dearsan Shipyard to build 2 Fast Attack Craft FAC 50 to Qatar


On March 6, 2024, at the Doha International Maritime Defence Exhibition, the Qatari Emiri Navy entered into a contract with Dearsan Shipyard for the development and construction of two 50-meter Fast Attack Craft.

The Fast Attack Craft FAC 50 is a modified version of the Fast Attack Craft 46 that was unveiled at this occasion of the seventh edition of the naval defense exhibition DIMDEX, in 2022.

About the FAC 46

The FAC 46 measures 46.75 meters in length and has a beam of 9.20 meters, with a draft of 1.90 meters, facilitating its navigation in various water depths. Its displacement stands at 320 tons, and it can reach speeds over 40 knots, with a range of 1000 nautical miles, allowing for extended operations.

The vessel incorporates a steel hull and a Sealium superstructure, designed to accommodate a crew of 24. It adheres to the standards set by Turkish Lloyd for classification.

Assigned to a variety of tasks, the FAC 46 is equipped for surface interdiction, asymmetric warfare, and patrol duties, among others. It is involved in safeguarding territorial waters, combating piracy, smuggling, and drug trafficking, and also undertakes surveillance, search and rescue operations, fishery protection, and disaster relief efforts. The capability for intercepting and boarding is also part of its operational scope.

The propulsion system includes three diesel engines and three water jets, supported by two diesel generators, facilitating efficient movement across vast maritime areas.

In terms of armaments, the FAC 46 is outfitted with a 40 mm Leonardo light naval gun, two 12.7 mm stabilized remote-controlled machine guns, and two 12.7 mm machine guns for manual use on pedestals. It also carries 2x2 SSM MARTE ER (MBDA) and a 1x2 SAM single turret SIMBAD RC (MBDA).
