"The first stage of the Russian-Chinese exercise Naval Interaction 2017 began on July 21 and will last through July 28. It has two phases, a coastal phase that began on July 21 and will last through July 24, and an active sea phase that will take place on July 25-28," Martov said.

A group of Chinese Navy ships comprising the destroyer Hefei, the frigate Yuncheng and the support vessel Luoma Lake were welcomed at the Baltic Fleet’s main base in Baltiysk in the Kaliningrad Region in west Russia.

"It is the first time in the history of Russian-Chinese relations that Chinese warships have visited Baltiysk," the spokesman said.

The maneuvers involve the Russian Project 20380 corvettes Steregushchy and Boiky, a rescue tug, Kamov Ka-27 (NATO reporting name: Helix) shipborne multipurpose helicopters, Sukhoi Su-24 (Fencer) frontline bombers and Antonov An-26 (Curl) military transport planes.

"During the exercise, Russia is being represented by Navy Deputy Commander-in-Chief Vice-Admiral Alexander Fedotenkov and China is being represented by Deputy Commander of the People’s Liberation Army Navy of China Vice-Admiral Tian Zhong," Martov said, adding that Russian was the official language of the naval maneuvers.

During the active stage of the exercise, Russian and Chinese sailors and naval aviation pilots will practice antisubmarine warfare and air and anti-ship defense in the Baltic Sea and rescue a ship seized by simulated pirates. They will also hold a search and rescue operation to provide assistance to a vessel notionally in distress and conduct live-firing against surface and aerial targets.
