The People's Liberation Army Navy (PLAN or Chinese Navy) commissioned the new Type 056 Corvette (Jiangdao class) Wuhai (hull number 540) during a ceremony in a North Sea Fleet naval base on Haiyang island (near Dalian where the PLAN 2nd aircraft carrier is at fitting out stage). Wuhai is the thirty-ninth Type 056 Corvette delivered to the PLAN fleet and the seventeenth Type 056A variant specialized in anti-submarine warfare (ASW).

France has started meeting with Greek officials this week about vessel procurement, including the new Belharra frigate, according to our source in Greece. We reported on Monday that negotiations on both FREMM frigates and Gowind corvettes would start soon according to local media.

Leonardo was awarded the most important project related to the first European Defence Found’s initiative, OCEAN2020, to boost Europe's defence capabilities, issued by the European Union under the ‘Preparatory Action on Defence Research’ programme. Russia’s Defense Ministry and the United Shipbuilding Corporation (USC) have come to an agreement that the Northern Shipyard in St. Petersburg in northwest Russia will start the construction of landing helicopter docks in 2020, a source in Russia’s defense industry told TASS.

The People's Liberation Army Navy (PLAN or Chinese Navy) commissioned its 26th Type 054A Frigate (Jiangkai II-class) "Rizhao" (hull number 598). The Commissioning ceremony took place on January 12, 2018 at Lüshunkou naval base (Liaoning province). The frigate joins the PLAN North Sea Fleet. The previous Type 054A Frigate, 25th in the class, was commissioned in July last year.

The Russian Navy launched a large-scale campaign to reinforce coastal missile brigades. Due to the creation of new missile squadrons and rearming with Bastion and Bal launchers the brigades will be able both of defending the coast and destroying ground objects. The units are armed with the latest reconnaissance drones for completely automatic target search. Experts believe the reinforced brigades will create a defense line along the Russian coast which will be bar all adversary warships, the Izvestia daily reported.

Greek daily newspaper Kathimerini reported last week that the Greek government is set to enter talks with France regarding the procurement of two FREMM frigates. Contacts between Greece and France will begin initially at a military level, starting in February the newspaper explains, citing well informed sources.

The DGA (Direction Générale de l’Armement) has just awarded a contract for technology development in the field of rotary-wing drones to the Naval Group and Airbus Helicopters consortium. The contract covers de-risking studies ahead of construction of a future tactical helicopter drone demonstrator aboard warships. The demonstration project will lead to trials of the drone launch system, mission system and airborne vehicle, conducted from a French Navy vessel.

iXblue, a specialist in maritime navigation and positioning, has been selected by Naval Group to equip five new 4000-ton frigates intended for the French Navy. Responsible for the development of these vessels, Naval Group has signed a contract with iXblue for the acquisition of Marins inertial navigation systems and Netans data distribution & processing units to equip these five new generation frigates.
