“Severnaya Verf Shipyard floated the Admiral Golovko in May. It has to join the fleet by the end of 2021 and become the third frigate of the project. It will increase combat capabilities of the fleet,” he said.

This year, the Northern fleet received the Knyaz Vladimir Borey-A-class SSBN of project 955A and the Admiral Kasatonov first serial frigate of project 22350. The Kazan Yasen-M-class SSGN of project 885M is to complete acceptance trials by the end of the year and will join the fleet.

“Other warships and vessels are planned for delivery. The Akademik Pashin tanker, the Nikolai Skosyrev small hydrographic vessel have joined the fleet already. The Romuald Muklevick hydrographic vessel returned after an overhaul and upgrade. The flag was hoisted on the Alexander Makorta hydrographic boat and the Pavel Simonov diving boat. We expect the Petr Morgunov big amphibious assault ship by the end of the year,” Moiseev said.

There are plans to develop the air defense in the Russian Arctic. In particular, S-400 Triumf air defense systems (ADS) are already operational in Novaya Zemlya Archipelago. Units of a new antiaircraft missile regiment armed with S-300 ADS have been deployed in the north of Yakutia. Besides air defense units, radar and guiding posts deployed on the coast of the Laptev Sea and Kotelny Island went on combat duty.

Military infrastructure is upgraded in Arctic islands and coast, including in Franz-Joseph Land, Novaya, Severnaya Zemlya, and Novosibirsk Islands.

Tank units of the fleet have been fully rearmed with T-80BVM tanks adapted for operation in the Arctic cold.

“The fleet held additional events to control the activities of NATO navies in the Northeastern Atlantic and the Barents Sea. All the aims have been achieved,” Moiseev said.

In 2020, the Northern fleet engaged antisubmarine long-range aviation both in the Arctic and the Northeastern and Central Atlantic. The antisubmarine aircraft numerously flew to the maximum distance and operated in the Bay of Biscay, the Baltic and Black Seas. The year of 2020 had a lot of combat training events, sorties to the Arctic, the Atlantic, the Mediterranean and other areas of the World Ocean, as well as expeditions and research.

“The Russian president decreed that from January 1, 2021 the Northern fleet shall acquire the status of a military district. It becomes a major military entity for the defense of the integrity and inviolability of the Russian Federation, including in the strategic Arctic direction,” the commander of the Northern fleet said.
