The Japanese Defense Ministry is seeking to secure a total budget of about 33.5 billion yen ($322 million) for the next fiscal year starting in April 2021.

Japanese Defense Minister Nobuo Kishi said last week the new air defense missile systems will be developed due to the significant improvements in other countries' early warning and control capabilities and also taking into account the performance of various types of missile.

Currently, the Japanese Defense Forces are equipped with 104 coastal defense systems including 22 Type-12 a truck-mounted anti-ship missile developed by Japan's Mitsubishi Heavy Industries in 2012 and 82 Type-88, a truck-mounted anti-ship missile developed by Japan's Mitsubishi Heavy Industries in the late 1980s.

The Type-12 consists of a truck launcher system with two rows of three canisters able to launch an anti-ship missile which has a maximum firing range of 200 km. The Type 12 features INS (Inertial Navigation System) with mid-course GPS guidance and better precision due to enhanced Terrain Contour Matching and target discrimination capabilities.

The Type-88 is based on a 6x6 military truck chassis with two rows of three launcher tubes able to fire the Type 80 (ASM-1) anti-ship missile. The vehicle is used as a coastal battery. The missile has a range of 180 km, high subsonic speed, and 225 kg warhead, it is similar to the US Harpoon missile.
